Artist´s Statement

For me the starting point for a new piece of art is most often the title. It comes to me in a flash, I say it aloud and then I have a picture in my mind. The materials I use, mainly, semiprecious stones and minerals, gold and freshwater pearls also inform me of what they want to express, with whom they want to partnered and I follow their lead. It is a delicious co-operation!

Transcending Boundaries

The Artistic Odyssey of Eva Rossi-Kivimäki

Eva Rossi-Kivimäki, often known simply as EvaRK, traces her roots back to the tranquil countryside of Southern Finland. However, she and her husband have spent a considerable part of their existence as nomads, settling temporarily in a range of countries across four continents over the past four decades.

2007 marks a significant time in their journey as they returned to Brazil – a place they once briefly called home. Nestled within the evergreen mountain region of Serra da Mantigueira in the State of São Paulo lies their farm surrounded by the lush Mata Atlântica rainforest.

The couple has adapted to their vibrant yet rugged lifestyle, filling the days with Eva’s art creation and her husband’s horse and cattle-rearing that swiftly replaced his corporate endeavors. The couple spends their evenings engrossed in the world of books, devoid of distractions such as television and temperamental internet.

Shaped by influential figures in her family, including a prima ballerina, an opera singer, acclaimed artists and architects, and the influence of art, literature and music that saturated her childhood home, EvaRK’s affection for arts has been longstanding. However, the pursuit of becoming an artist was not her initial ambition. Instead, she pursued her love for languages, eventually obtaining a Master’s in English Philology from the University of Turku.

EvaRK’s professional journey started taking shape in 1981 when her husband’s career took them to South Africa. There she launched a career in the travel industry, establishing that journeying had become an integral part of her existence. In addition to South Africa the couple has lived in Italy, Switzerland, Chile, Brazil, United States, United Kingdom and Isle of Man with Eva practicing languages, learning new ones and immersing herself in the world of art.

While she has been influenced by Louis Comfort Tiffany and Gustav Klimt, Eva’s unique artistic lens is mainly focused on the natural world above us. The celestial bodies, in particular, are a constant source of inspiration. Her interest extends to the portrayal of strength and resilience in women, often using symbolic motifs and structures in her pieces.

EvaRK’s career leap from an art lover to an artist happened in Miami when she enrolled in a beginner’s class in stained glass. Later, as an artist, she explored a wide range of themes, adopting novel materials such as semiprecious stones, minerals, freshwater pearls, gold and silver, and a unique style that took her work beyond conventional stained glass creations.

Around the turn of the millennium, EvaRK was commissioned to create three large stained glass windows in the official residence of the Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Miami. This milestone affirmed her self-identification as a professional artist, paving the way for her to contribute to her artistic world across continents in cities such as London, Helsinki, Rome, New York and São Paulo.

Despite the allure of global travel and a life in any glittering city of their choice  the farm in Brazil was where the couple settled down. In this tranquil setting EvaRK found new paths of creative expression, leading to the birth of her own gallery, and embracing mosaic as a medium, which drastically transformed her artistic approach.

Humility, perseverance and profound respect for nature and the raw materials underpin her active meditation practice – the creation of her anthology where an art piece might appear dark but which always carries a positive message. The depth of her work and its evolutionary journey mirrors her life’s vibrantly colored journey, painting a story of resilience, exploration and continuous growth.
